 COLD WEATHER ALERT

Level 2 – Alert and readiness (Forecast issued Friday 27/01/2012)

There is a 70% probability of severe cold wether between 1800 on Sunday and 0900 on Tuesday. This weather could increase the health risks to vunerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services.

South West England - spell of rain with a chance of some sleet and snow (wintry precipitation mainly over the hills) later on Sunday and through Monday, especially for eastern areas, but details remain uncertain. Turning cold thereafter (from Tuesday) but becoming mainly dry. The next couple of nights will also see an overnight frost in many areas with some icy patches forming on untreated surfaces.

MET OFFICE – COLD WEATHER ALERT

A marked temperature change into the weekend as high pressure brings settled but cold conditions. The cold and settled weather looks set to continue into the beginning of next week.

Regional Risk Assessments for occurrence of cold weather conditions between 0000 local time on Saturday  14th January and 0900 local time on Tuesday 17th January.

Southwest England 60% risk. eastern parts will see mean temperatures drop below 2 degrees C ,from Saturday onwards. Cornwall and West Devon are expected to experience milder conditions with mean temperatures here remaining above 2 degree C

Individuals at occupational risk

There is a strong association between welding and the development of pneumococcal disease, particularly lobar pneumonia (Palmer et al., 2003: Industrial Injuries Advisory Council 2010) Therefore, welders who have not received the pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) previously, should be offered a single dose of 0.5ml of PPV23  vaccine. Employers  should ensure that provision is in place  for workers to receive PPV23

MET OFFICE – COLD WEATHER ALERT SERVICE

The met office has been working with the Department of Health and the Health Protection Agency to develop the cold weather plan. The aim of the plan is to reduce the impact of severe cold weather on people’s health and in doing so, help keep people well and reduce the number of deaths.

The cold weather plan can be found on the Department of Health website at The cold weather plan is linked to a winter weather system developed by the Met Office. The plan sets out actions at four alert levels:

Level 1 (Green) – winter Preparedness, Level 2 (Yellow) – extreme winter weather is forecast, Level 3 (Amber) – Response to extreme winter weather, Level 4 (Red) – major incident. These specific actions for each alert are detailed in the plan.

Arthritis Care – Challenging Pain Workshop

Arthritis Care has developed a new training workshop covering managing pain, fatigue, stress, negativity, exercise, breathing and relaxation techniques. Run over two consecutive weeks, it is free and open to all people with chronic long term pain.
